Tomorrow at The Recovering Politician

Tomorrow, we are very excited to add to our contributing roster our first former United States Senator.  His term was quite memorable, albeit very short — he served for four months to fill the vacancy of a true legend of that august body.

Still a very young man, he has quite a future ahead of him.  Time magazine this year named him last year to its super-prestigious “40 Under 40″ list of rising political stars

SPOILER ALERT:  Clicking on the previous link will ruin the surprise of his big reveal tomorrow.

Whoops, you already clicked?  Sorry.  Please don’t tell your friends.

By the way, you Jeff Smith fanboys/gals out there:  His piece on election reform that we promised today got delayed 24 hours.  You can read it in its full glory tomorrow.

See you on Hump Day!

Where in the World is The RP?

Today’s addition of Where in the World is the RP takes us to RP nirvana.

Back during his tour of duty in the nation’s capital, the RP and his BFF, the late great Alex Haught, used to hang out during cherry blossom season at the Jefferson Memorial.  So the RP communes with cherry blossom trees whenever possible.

This past weekend, the RP attended a Japanese-themed cherry blossom festival far from his home in Kentucky.  He made some new friends as well.

Guess the precise location of this particular cherry blossom festival, and win an autographed copy of the RP’s The Compassionate Community: Ten Values to Unite America.  (Family and close friends of the RP are strictly disqualified).

Hint: It ain’t Tokyo:

The RP Celebrates A Month Clean & Sober (From Politics) w/a Diverse Array of Osama Commentary

Yesterday was an historic day for the country, and an exciting anniversary for The Recovering Politician.

We marked the one month birthday of this web site with a series of posts that proved why a post-partisan forum for civil dialogue is so essential. Without ratings-generating hype, partisanship, rancor, chest-thumping, or name-calling, our contributors provided a diverse set of thought-provoking posts about the meaning of Sunday night’s history-making events.

If you haven’t had a chance to read yesterday’s pieces, here you can browse through the links to posts by former Congressman Artur Davis, history professor Ronald J. Granieri, New York transplant Mark Nickolas, State Senator/international businessman Jason Atkinson, and myself (here and here).

Yesterday, of course, I also celebrated a month of sobriety, from the toxicity of the political system.

Tomorrow & A Wrapup of Today’s Bin Laden Analysis

Today was the busiest day for posts in the long history of The Recovering Politician. (OK, it’s only been a month.)

Make sure you browse through the variety of illuminating and thought-provoking posts by members of the RP team, including former Congressman Artur Davis, history professor Ronald J. Granieri, New York transplant Mark Nickolas, State Senator/international businessman Jason Atkinson, and the RP himself (here and here).

Tuesday, Jeff Smith is back, offering some ideas about election reform, and we’ll play another prize-winning game of Where in the World is the RP?

Thanks for joining us on this historic day.

The RP: A Day of Remembrance

I wrote earlier that today is a today of celebration.

But perhaps it is even more a day of remembrance.  Let us never forget the thousands of Americans — of nearly ever race, creed and ethnicity — who perished on 9/11 because of Osama bin Laden’s conspiracy of mass murder.

Did you lose a friend or loved one?  Did someone you love narrowly escape death?

Please use the comments section below to share your stories:

UPDATE:

A reader, Daniel Solzman, reminded me that today is the Jewish holiday, Yom Hashoah, the Day of Remembrance, the day on which we solemnly remember the 6 million Jews and millions of others who perished during the Holocaust.

And then my daughter, Emily, reminded me that yesterday was the 66th anniversary of the day on which the world learned that Hitler had died. (May 1, 1945.)

As my wife, Lisa, constantly preaches, there are no coincidences.

The RP: Bin Laden and A Day of Bipartisan Celebration

I’m traveling this week, went to sleep early, and awoke to a half dozen texts from my teenage daughters.

Uh oh.

When I read the joy and excitement in their messages, I remembered that their first politicial memory – the first real-world memory for all young Americans of their generation – was 9/11. This is America’s first post-partisan generation; they care much more about their country and their communities than partisan labels. When I turned on the TV this morning, I saw thousands upon thousands of young people, singing and dancing in the streets of Times Square, Ohio State’s campus, DC’s Pennsylvania Avenue, etc., etc.

So today is not a Democratic moment, or a Republican moment. It is an American moment. It is events like these that encouraged me to start this web site. It is my sincere hope that the unity we see today can be replicated and extended beyond this brief period of celebration.

We’ll have more to say on justice and Bin Laden. But right now, let’s bask in the joy of our kids and grandkids. As we determine to fix this broken, hyper partisan political system, remember: It is all about them.

Next Week at The Recovering Politician

I hope you enjoyed women’s week at The Recovering Politician.

If there is a theme for next weeks, it’s the United States Senate.  All of our new contributing RPs introduced next week have either served in that august body, or ran a race that fell just short. I think you will enjoy their stories.

Hope you enjoy a fun and dry(!) weekend.  See you on Monday.

Tomorrow at The Recovering Politician

Friday we complete our week-long series of outstanding women contributing recovering politicians.  You will hear from a former metropolitan city councilwoman who decided to seek greener pastures in the private sector.

We will also have another Friday Video Flashback, this time featuring an incredible politicial — and physical — feat by one of out female contributing RPs.

See you tomorrow!

BIG SITE NEWS: We now work on your mobile device!

One of the leading gripes we’ve received about The Recovering Politician is that it was too cumbersome and too slow to access on a mobile device, particularly by Crackberry addicts such as myself.

Well, we listened, and after thousands of hours of laborious research and hard work (OK, it took us a minute to download some new software), we now are accessible by Blackberries, IPhones, Androids, you name it.

So please try us out on your mobile device, surf around our site, and give us your feedback.  Is it working?  Is it still too slow?  Does the new technology make up for the RP’s horrible sense of humor?

Let us know in the comments below.  Thanks!
