Progress Kentucky has managed to make news twice during its short existence, and both times it involved Mitch McConnell. The first time was last month when the liberal PAC slammed McConnell’s wife Elaine Chao. They questioned her family connections in Asia regarding business dealings. Before I go further, let me point out that I did reach out to Progress Kentucky via e-mail in an attempt to get their side of things, but never got a response.
This time they just did something even more stupid. Founders Shawn Reilly, and Curtis Morrison have reportedly admitted to another Democratic operative, that they secretly recorded the McConnell strategy meeting leaked to Mother Jones Magazine. McConnell’s camp claimed it had been recorded by a bug, or through concealed recording gear, but it seems now that the two overgrown frat boys simply stood unnoticed in the hallway and used a cell phone to record the meeting. First of all, I apologize to McConnell and his staff, because I was convinced this was an internal recording, that was somehow leaked to the magazine. It was clearly not the case, and I stand corrected.
What Progress Kentucky has done once again is give McConnell the high moral ground in a situation where he should rightly be questioned about his proposed tactics. I said it before, and I’ll say it again. This is a case of stupidity run amok. Progress Kentucky clearly has no idea what they are doing. If they believe they are aiding Kentucky Democrats by these idiotic tactics, they are sorely mistaken. In fact, they managed to prove a McConnell insider to be correct when he called this episode, “Nixonian.” The White House Plumbers in the 70’s began as a couple of inept fratboys from college, and graduated to be inept political operatives working for Nixon. Well, the word ‘inept’ fits this scenario to a tee.
Reilly and Morrison seem to think making a splash and getting investigated by the FBI is a hoot or something. It must be all they’re interested in since they have not exhibited one iota of political savvy since they formed their PAC. McConnell has enough of a record that he can be hammered on any number of real issues. But this kind of stuff is the best they can do it seems. Way to go guys! I can truly say I have never seen anyone manage to go from totally unknown, to amazingly inept, to complete pariahs in such a short time.
