Al Mayo: Progress Kentucky Has Been GONGED!

Throughout our country’s history, amateurs have accomplished great things. ‘Major Bowes Amateur Hour’ helped discover Frank Sinatra. ‘Arthur Godfrey’ helped discover Patsy Cline. Bobby Jones won all of his tournaments as an amateur. The 1980 USA Hockey team. Then we come to the Gong Show! Progress Kentucky is The Unknown Comic of Kentucky Politics. Wake up fellas! Jaye P. Morgan just smacked the gong and your time is up!

Progress Kentucky never ceases to amaze me. The two-man PAC managed to take a simple thing like raising political money and turn it into a disaster of epic proportions for Kentucky Democrats. While Senator Mitch McConnell sits back and watches in ill-disguised amusement, any serious opposition he might have faced next year is quickly running for cover. For weeks, McConnell has been able to tread the high ground thanks to Progress Kentucky. With recent revelations and more to follow, it appears Mitch will remain on top for a while.

First it was idiotic tweets that made fun of the Senator’s wife and her ethnic background, then questioned her family business ties to China. Elaine Chao is the former Labor Secretary, and McConnell’s wife. None of those accusations have any basis in fact. Just as that debacle blew over, word came of the illicit recording of a secret McConnell strategy meeting. McConnell immediately called the FBI after the recording surfaced on Mother Jones Magazine’s web site. They determined no actual bugging took place but the recording was made via a hand-held electronic device. Soon after that revelation, reports began to seep out that members of Progress Kentucky were behind this whole thing. There are hundreds of details now showing up about PK and the supposed “masterminds” behind the PAC. None of them have been positive.

Progress Kentucky has raised a grand total of just over one thousand dollars. Mitch McConnell has 12 million in his campaign war chest. Notice the difference? It’s the difference that occurrs when a complete bunch of novices take on a Senator who is the most powerful Republican in the country. Not only have these total amateurs managed to make McConnell look more SENATORIAL, they made him look like the victim. Which he was in this particular case. They also have pulled off the neat trick of alienating their OWN PARTY!

Not one Democrat has risen to their defense, nor should they. In fact I haven’t seen so many politicians run for cover so fast in my life. Worse still, no Democrat worth supporting will rise up and announce a candidacy anytime soon. they want nothing to do with this mess, and the longer they wait, the better it is for them. Or is it? Clearly the answer is NO! If any candidate wants to seriously challenge Mitch McConnell, they need to be organizing and fund-raising NOW! But thanks to Progress Kentucky, none will do that for at least the foreseeable future.

A lot more details will be flooding out via the media and in some cases it has already begun. Whatever you do as a voter, try to keep an open mind on any Democratic senatorial candidate. It wasn’t their fault. At least not this time!
